Awesome Feline's self-titled demo

Usually when doing a CD review, I adapt the writing style a little depending on the genre and pick up on different things, but when I put this particular one on I wasn’t quite sure what to write, enter Awesome Feline, and their name isn’t the only good thing about them as they put on quite a dynamic set down at the Sno! Bar before my last gig with BATR. (And righteously put our set to shame in the process)

The thing is, you have bands that are deep set into their particular styles or rather the styles of bands in a similar vein, but with Awesome Feline the sounds have a raucousness that typifies punk along with some technical metal areas and still fitting in melodies, something pretty refreshing when “indie” bands are expectedly “indie”, hardcore bands are unsurprisingly hardcore and, well, you get the picture.

So what exactly do this three-piece have to offer? Their start with “Get Me Started” might be a little bit misleading with a relatively simple lick-ridden punk melody, but it starts off on an energetic foot and with the rest of the material borderlining between straight rock and melodic punk it’s not exactly standing out like a sore thumb.

As for between those two boundaries, on one hand you have “Bad Day All Week” that drifts into the rock territory with some chilled beats and a bit of a heavy back-end that bulks out a bit of a rise, then you have “Nine” that caps off the Cd with a hard-rock tinged punk riff and a stoic beat that gathers up into a break that finishes off the demo with a flurry of rolling drums and tapped solos, yeah, there’s a bit of metal injected there too.

The lighter tones come through in “Falling Apart” that eases of the distortion into a more laid back frame of mind a summery chorus and a beat that doesn’t really kick in until the track launches into a lengthy break and another pretty satisfying solo. It’s probably the best four and a half minutes on the demo for this reviewer.

The vocals are always going to be a weak point for most bands and Awesome Feline do have a few flat moments in that respect, but they aren’t stumbling. Besides, as I’ll always say, it’s better seeing these guys live, it’s dynamic rock that thinks a bit outside of the box, they way most bands should think. I’ve definitely found a band I want to check out more.
